1918年的“西班牙流感”疫情极为严重,导致大约5000万人死亡。但为什么该疫情破坏力如此之大?也许是因为缺少用来对抗二次感染的抗生素,也许是由于社会经济方面的因素。但用最近重建的1918年流感对非人类灵长目动物所做的实验感染表明,该病毒本身的致命性是一个重要因素。它实际上是对实验感染的非人类灵长目动物能够致命的惟一流感病毒。 此外,1918年的流感病毒(而不是传统的人类病毒)能抑制先天免疫反应。因为当前流行的H5N1病毒也能引起与1918年病毒所引起的类似的严重肺部感染,并且也能影响先天免疫反应,所以保护宿主免疫系统中这部分功能的干预措施,也许能够减轻这些流感病毒所造成的感染的严重程度。

原生动物“刚地弓形虫”(Toxoplasma gondii)能引起细胞内感染,而病情严重程度则相差极大,既有不可避免的死亡,又有基本没有症状的情况,也有慢性感染。造成这种差异性的原因一直有点像谜一样,但现在研究人员已经识别出了有可能解释该现象的一种酶。研究发现,弓形虫能向宿主细胞中注入一种蛋白激酶,该激酶会被迅速转送进细胞核,在那里它会大大改变基因表达,包括决定宿主对感染反应的基因。不同类别的弓形虫有不同版本的这种蛋白,这有可能解释其致病能力为什么有很大差异。
