近年来，非编码RNA（即没有被翻译成蛋白质的RNA）在调控基因表达中扮演一个至关重要的角色已经成为一个清楚的事实。关于这种调控的一个以前人们不知道的证据现在已经被发现，调控作用发生在人类二氢叶酸还原酶（DHFR）基因上。干涉RNA与DHFR基因的促进子区域形成一个复合物，在这个过程中，它干涉转录因子的结合。非编码RNA只在静止的细胞中产生，并在这些条件下导致DHFR基因受到抑制。

DNA去甲基化过程的一个关键调控因子
科学家越来越认识到，DNA甲基化（一个普遍存在的调控机制）可以被一个被称为“活性去甲基化”的过程所逆转，但他们对这个过程背后的机制却不是很清楚。DNA去甲基化领域的进展因缺乏关于关键调控因子的知识而受到阻碍，这些关键调控因子有可能成为揭开这一过程奥秘的起点。现在，Barreto等人报告，他们发现了一个这样的调控因子，名叫Gadd45a（全称为“可诱导生长抑制和DNA损伤的蛋白45-阿尔法”）。以前的研究工作表明，Gadd45a是p53和BRCA1肿瘤抑制基因的一个作用目标。在这里，Gadd45a是通过促进DNA修复来消除甲基化痕迹、从而解除基因沉寂的方式发挥作用的。
